John Cumming took out a licence for Cardhu( or Cardow as it was originally called) in 1824 following the ground breaking Excise Act of the previous year. After John’s death in 1846 his son Lewis and daughter in law Elizabeth, took over the distillery, but following Lewis’s death in 1872, Elizabeth adopted the role of principal distiller. She completely rebuilt the distillery on near by land in 1884 and subsequently sold off some of the old plant ,including a pair of very thin and patched pot stills to a certain William Grant who then was in the process of setting up Glenfiddich distillery. Cardhu was subsequently extended in 1887. The spiritual home of Johnnie Walker..
