About Dalmore

Pronounced dal-MORE meaning Big Meadowland.
The distillery was established in 1839 by Alexander Matherson, who made a fortune in the opium trade. Matherson did not operate the distillery himself but put it in the control of various tenants on his estate. In 1867 Andrew Mackenzie ran the distillery and eventually bought it off Matherson family in 1891. Buy that time the number of stills had been doubled to four and Dalmore was the first Scotch malt whisky to be exported to Australia in 1870.
During the first world war the distillery was used by the Admiralty as a mine making facility, and it was not until 1922 that production resumed due to damage caused by an explosion. In 1966 another four stills were installed to double capacity.
Some of Dalmore’s bottles of whisky have been sold at auction in the past between 25 and 32 thousand pounds..
