About Glengoyne

Location Scotland
Founded
Whiskeybase rating 86.14

Pronounced glen-GOYN Meaning Glen of the wild geese. The theoretical Highland Line that divides Highland and Lowland single malts runs through the distillery site, meaning that although  the spirit is distilled in the Highlands it is matured in the Lowlands, as Glengoyne’s  warehouses are below the line. Started as Burnfoot, Glenguin 1876 and Glengoyne after 1905.
In 1886 it had 2,200 gallons mash tun. five washbacks holding 2,000 gallons each, and one 3,500 gallons. Two old pot stills, 1,210 and 850 gallons. They triple distilled (partially?). The first Scottish distillery that stops with floor-malting 1910. Rebuilt 1965-67 and expands from two to three pot stills (one wash, two spirit). They are all steam-heated. Uses a 3,7 tonnes traditional mash tun with rake and plough and copper canopy. In 2013 the replaced it with a semi Lauter mash tun. Now six Oregon pine washbacks.
Labels: Glengoyne (SMWS 123). The spirit are Highland but the whisky are stored in Lowland……
